A bird’s eye view: the opportunity to view your life from a new perspective. It is seeing your day-to-day through a different lens, from the block you live on and the construction you watch slowly develop to the change in greenery and signaling birds as they welcome the change of seasons. As Christian Wijnants designed his third collection in lock-down, it is this idea of being a tourist in your own city that inspired his Resort 2022 collection.
A beautiful long, narrow coat is inspired by Christian’s traditional neighborhood and a t-shirt depicts that of a bird looking outwards, providing a literal representation of the inspiration. While more vague nods can be seen through the floral prints – hand-painted on silk to allow the grain of the textile and dilution of the paint come through when screen printed on different fabrications. The blurriness that remains imitates what we see when we take another look at our home, finding beauty in its imperfections. The collection also includes additional prints such as checkers, polka-dots and stripes. The seasonal colorways are fresh and colorful, with florescent green, lime, yellow, pistachio, jade, blue marine and tangerine, accompanying the classic black, white and navy.
Silhouettes vary from elongated trousers and trench coats to denim shirts and jackets that feature wide, cocooned sleeves evoking the comfort of a hug. Pieces are layered in various ways with different colors of the floral print playfully paired together, appearing like a fresh bouquet of flowers, and a fringed dress is worn over coordinating trousers, looking almost feathered when caught by the breeze. Accessories are also a large focus from crochet totes and a down filled crossbody with a similar shape and feel to that of a pillow to silk scarves tied on belt loops and printed caps.
Knitwear remains a focus for Christian, introducing his second Essential collection. Christian continues to offer a fresh take on knits, creating new seamless shapes through the continued use of a whole garment machine. This season offers some boxy and tank styles with more sculpted dresses and cropped pieces. The fabrications are strategic and include organic cotton and fabrics that are mono materials. Although the Essential collection exists separately, it is easily paired with the RTW, as seen through a knit tank paired over a silk blouse and trousers.
On the 26th floor, the highest in Antwerp, the collection is brought to life through imagery shot in an unfinished residential building. The marked walls, wires, and hard hats, show progress, but like the reopening of the city, that much is left to finish. The emptiness of the floor lined by floor-to-ceiling perfectly clear windows, brings the story of the Resort 2022 collection full circle; offering a backdrop that allowed Christian to have an overview of his home, feeling as though he could fly away, continuing to explore new elements of his city.
